Our organization is committed to our mission and we are currently taking the necessary steps to operate as a non-profit organization. Check back here regularly to get updates on our progress!
The Veterans Mental Health Coalition of New York City
The Veterans Mental Health Coalition (VMHC), co-founded by MHA-NYC and NAMI-NYC Metro, was formed to promote policy and practice change to ensure access to quality mental health care and related services for veterans, service members, and their families.
The VMHC is a diverse group of over 950 individuals including veterans’ service and advocacy leaders, behavioral health and social service providers, government leaders, private and corporate funders, researchers, academics, and advocates. This cross-section of professionals is committed to thoughtfully addressing the unique challenges faced by veterans.
The VMHC is dedicated to helping veterans and their families with behavioral health issues. We provide information, education, networking, and promotion of a variety of services to help veterans get the care and support they need. We are a broad-based, credible resource for addressing the needs of veterans and their families.
Veteran Housing Program
The main focus of veteran housing programs in NYC and the rest of New York State is to help veterans get back into a home and stay there. When you consider all of the different reasons why veterans may struggle with homelessness, it can become quite complicated quite quickly. The mental and physical damage that serving our country can cause only amplifies the social and economic disadvantages that some veterans might face.
Ending homelessness for Veterans in New York is a team effort that requires nonprofits, volunteers, and government agencies to work together to find solutions. Veterans Support Coalition New York is one of the best resources available to homeless Veterans in the state, and they are committed to helping them get back on their feet. With the help of everyone involved, we can end homelessness for Veterans in New York.

I am sure you will agree that those two words should never be used in the same sentence. The facts are that over 50,000 veterans are homeless on any given night in the United States. Nearly 600 homeless Veterans are in the Capital District. It is equally devastating that 22 veterans commit suicide on a daily basis.

Imagine. Imagine not knowing where you were going to sleep at night. Imagine not knowing where, when, and if you would eat again. Imagine what you have in a rucksack. Imagine.
Imagine being homeless, sleeping on the cold, hard ground with nothing. No clean clothes, no money to eat, no booze, not even a family to talk to. Imagine.
Being homeless or at risk of becoming homeless is one of the hardest things a person can go through. Lacking the security of knowing where you will sleep at night, having no place to keep your belongings, and not having the ability to care for your person and family can lead to stress, anger, a sense of shame, depression, and physical discomfort.
This is the reality for veterans who end up on the street.
Most people are lucky they haven’t lived on the street. But for those who do, it can be a very traumatic experience that is hard to escape from, damaging physical and emotional well-being along the way.
